Sweet Independence with Hershey’s Simple Pleasures!

There I was, laying in bed when my phone buzzed.  I reached over to see who emailed me.  Imagine the excitement I felt when I saw that it was an email asking me if I wanted to take part in the “Sweet Independence with Hershey’s Simple Pleasures”!  I love chocolate.  It is one of my downfalls; something I have eat in severe moderation.  Which if you know me, that is SOOOO hard to do!  But having Type 2 Diabetes, I have no choice.

Hershey’s Simple Pleasures chocolates have 30 percent less fat than the average leading milk chocolate!

I’ll let that sink in for a moment.  Oh and show you a picture of this extreme awesomeness!

Don’t they look yummy?!?

While I was very excited about the fact that these chocolates have 30 percent less fat, I had to check out the serving size and carbohydrate count.  You see, being Type 2 Diabetic, those are very important to me and my personal diet plan.  When I saw that the serving size was SIX chocolates, I screamed!  No really, I did.  My daughter was sitting with me and she dove off the chair thinking I saw a spider or one of those creepy centipedes.  But I didn’t.   What I was screaming about was that with a carbohydrate count of 28 for six chocolates, this makes an excellent pick me up snack for me.  Because I limit my sugar intake, I can eat just one here or there and the carbohydrate count is perfect for me!  I immediately went for the chocolate with vanilla cream.  Delicious.  Absolutely delicious!

These Hershey’s Simple Pleasures will definitely be something I keep around my house!  My husband really liked the Dark Chocolate with Chocolate Creme.  Me, not so much…but I am not a huge dark chocolate fan so don’t go by me on that one!  Be sure to check out the Hershey’s Simple Pleasures new Facebook page.  Be sure to declare what you are celebrating YOUR independence from!

Great Breakfast Option

I am ALWAYS on the look out for good breakfast and snack options.  When I was if I wanted to try out the new Kraft Foods belVita Breakfast Biscuits, I was a tad skeptical.  To be honest, they don’t look like something I would typically like.  But I said yes.  Shoot, if I expect my kids to try new things, I have to be willing to…right?

Here’s a little information about the belVita Breakfast Biscuits:

  • Provides nutritious sustained energy for the whole morning
  • 18-20g of delicious whole grain per serving
  • Good source of fiber and B vitamins
  • No High Fructose Corn Syrup
  • No hydrogenated oils
  • No Artificial flavors or sweeteners

The new Kraft Foods belVita Breakfast Biscuits come in three great varieties:  blueberry, apple cinnamon, and golden oat.  You get five packages of four breakfast biscuits (each individually wrapped) in each box.  The suggested retail price is $3.69 (but I just saw them on the shelf and they were on sale!!).  The nice thing about the belVita Breakfast Biscuits is the fact that they were created with nutritionists in order to provide nutritious sustained energy for the whole morning.  So what exactly is “nutritious sustained energy”?

The sustained energy release results from a combination of specially selected ingredients and a carefully controlled baking process that helps preserve the integrity of the grain, so that the carbohydrates are released regularly and continuously to fuel the body.

Now I told you at the beginning that I was skeptical.  Oh my gosh!  I was so wrong!  They are absolutely delicious!!  The blueberry are by far my favorite.  The golden oat flavor are really good too!  I have not tried, nor will I try the apple cinnamon, but that is only because I cannot handle cinnamon.  I can’t stand it.  But my husband loves it!  Pair these breakfast biscuits with a small yogurt cup and a small fruit and you have a very nutritious breakfast!

I’ve Dropped How Many Sizes?!?

I’ve posted quite a bit about my journey with Diabetes and my quest to lose 100lbs.  I am very proud of my accomplishment.  In fact, I was thinking about it today while I was taking a shower (I do my best thinking in the shower!) that if someone were to ask me what my greatest accomplishment in life is, I would have to say (besides my family and how well I coupon) my weight loss and essentially beating Diabetes (or at least keeping it away for now).

For those newcomers, I was diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic back in February…right before my 30th birthday (Happy Birthday to me right?).  At first I was totally angry at the world.  But now I really do see that diagnosis as a blessing in disguise.  How can I not?  I’ve lost 43lbs since February.  I look great…sure I have a ways to go (57lbs to be exact), but I know I can do it.  I have willpower that I never knew I had.  In fact, I went to dinner with my parents and kids today and for dessert my kids and parents each got donuts.  Me?  I simply sipped my diet coke (and drooled a bit), but I was perfectly fine.  I didn’t have donut-envy, well not too much, but it didn’t kill me.  7 months ago…I wouldn’t have been able to say no.

Update

Since writing this post, back in 2011, I gained all that weight back. I reached my breaking point in January of 2016. Reaching an all time high of 250 lbs, I was done being out of breath and tired all the time. While I was able to keep my Type 2 Diabetes under control, I wanted more. I wanted to lose the weight I had lost before, but this time, I wanted to keep it off. With the help of friends, I started the Keto diet.

Giving up sugar wasn’t easy, at first. However, after about a week, I no longer craved sugar or any foods, for that matter! It was the best feeling in the world. From January 2016 to now, the weight loss has been amazing. I have lost about 83 lbs. I’ve dropped many sizes (from a 22/24 to a 10/12). But best of all, I feel amazing. I have more energy than I’ve ever had; I sleep great; and ALL of my bloodwork is better than it’s ever been. All from eating FAT! See for yourself!

start the keto diet

If you take anything from this post, take this:  You can do this.  All you have to do is set your mind to it. It may have taken me a little longer to figure my weight loss journey out, but the bottom line is, you can do it! Read up on everything I’ve written on the Keto diet over the course of the last year. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out and ask! I am not an expert, but I will help you in any way I can!

Thomas Sandwich Croissants

One of the hardest things about finding out I am diabetic was the thought of giving up things I truly love, like bread.  More specifically…croissants.  Their buttery goodness, whether you are dipping them in a bowl of soup or enjoying one for breakfast, the idea of giving them up was too much.  And give them up is exactly what I did, until I received an email asking if I would like to review a package of Thomas Sandwich Croissants.

My first question was “how many carbs are there per serving”…part of me figured I would be told that there were 45+ carbs per serving which would make it impossible for me to eat this since I only allow myself 45 carbs per meal.  When I got the email back telling me that each Thomas Sandwich Croissant only has 21 carbs, I was ecstatic!  I could have this!

Let me tell you, these are delicious!  And there are so many things you can do with them.  Chicken or tuna salad for lunch…or how about a fried egg and bacon for breakfast?  My kids like me to butter them and put it in the microwave for a few seconds!  Really the possibilities are endless.

Thomas Sandwich Croissants are all pre-sliced and come in packs of 6 and are only 160 calories per serving!  Right now, Thomas Sandwich Croissants are only available in supermarkets in CT, NJ and NY (bummer for me).  They retail for $4.59.

Hopefully once Thomas realizes how popular these are, they will be available nationwide!!  One can only hope!

Crystal Light Mocktails!

I’ve pretty much made peace with the fact that I am diabetic and I will forever have to live a life watching what I eat so I don’t end up having to give myself insulin.  In fact…I may or may not have even been quoted as saying that “finding out I am diabetic was probably the best thing to ever happen to me“.  And it’s true.  I am so much healthier now than I was back in February.

But I have to admit…a couple things have been a little rough this summer.  One being that not a single 7-Eleven in the area has Diet slurpees.  I mean seriously, what is up with that?  And then there’s the whole lemonade thing.  I love lemonade.  But it’s obviously not in my best interest to waste my carbs on a drink.  So I don’t drink lemonade any more unless it’s Crystal Light Lemonade.

Alcohol is another issue for me.  I liked being able to have a Margarita every so often.  But…since alcohol (and whatever I mix it with) raises my blood sugar so much, it’s just not worth it.  And believe me…going out to dinner with friends and family where they are all ordering Margarita’s and other mixed drink really stinks to be stuck with an ice water or diet pop.

But guess what!  Crystal Light has come up with an awesome alternative…New Crystal Light Mocktails!  Now people like me who can’t have a regular Margarita, Mojito,  or Appletini can have it without having to worry about how it is going to effect them!  The New Crystal Light Mocktails contain under 5 calories per serving, 0 carbs, and they are gluten free!

This weekend I plan on making a pitcher of the New Crystal Light Margarita flavored Mocktail, but instead of drinking it “on the rocks” I want to put it in my Vitamix Blenderwith some ice and make it like a frozen Margarita!

The New Crystal Light Mocktails are around for a very short period of time so be sure to get yours today!
