During my teen years, my skin was perfect. I’m not even joking.I could probably count on one hand how many zits I had. That all changed once I started having kids. Since getting pregnant for the first time when I was 22 years old (I’m 33 now), my skin has broken out like crazy. I finally started seeing a dermatologist, but everything she wanted me to do was crazy to me. One of which was take a low dose antibiotic every day. Um…hello…crazy! Can you imagine the horrible yeast infection that would form from that? Sheesh! I respectfully declined. Little did I know, I had a solution sitting in my pantry…coconut oil!

I’ve posted before about my love for essential oils and making better decisions for myself and my family to live a healthier lifestyle. I’ve read a lot about coconut oil and all the billions of uses for it from cooking to swishing with it in your mouth…I haven’t done that yet, I’m kind of scared! One of the things I read was that you could wash your face with coconut oil. So I did and I love it!
Why Does it Work?
Simply put, oil dissolves oil. When you wash your face with coconut oil you are, essentially removing all the gross, dirty oil and replacing it with pure, clean oil. Our skin needs oil.
DIY Coconut Oil Face Wash with Essential Oils Recipe
- 2/3 cup Organic Cold Pressed Coconut Oil
- Young Living Lavender Essential Oil (I used 70 drops)
- Place the coconut oil and lavender essential oil in a mixing bowl.
- Using an electric mixer, mix the two together until you have a nice creamy mixture.
- Put the mixture into a small mason jar and secure the lid tightly.
This part is IMPORTANT!! You only need a little bit…maybe about a teaspoon or less. This is one of those things where less is definitely more! Massage the coconut oil into your face for about 30 seconds or so. Take a wash cloth and using hot water place the wash cloth on your face and then gently wipe off. Be careful not to get the coconut oil in your eyes…just trust me on this one!
You can add whatever essential oil you would like. I chose to go with Young Living Lavender oil because lavender oil is soothing to the skin, helps promote good sleep and it is relaxing to your mind and body. Who wouldn’t want to rub that all over their face at night before bed?!?
**Please note, for some people I’ve read that there could be a transition period. So you could potentially see your face get worse before it gets better. This doesn’t happen with everyone, and it hasn’t happened with me, but it could. Stick it out! I’m sure you will love the results, I know I am!**
