How to Make Spider Spray with Essential Oils

Spring is finally here! I know…it doesn’t matter where you live, everyone is happy that winter is over! While it’s nice to see a sunny sky or green grass, one thing I really don’t like about this time of year is all the spiders. Being that our family room, the room we spend the most time in, is on a cement slab, we always seem to have the random spider run across the floor. The worst is when I’m sitting there watching T.V. and all of a sudden there’s a spider dangling from the ceiling in front of my face. It takes everything in me to not throw my laptop when that happens!

I’ve done a lot of research about the different spider sprays out there, but none are really all that safe with kids or pets. We could build a bat house in the backyard, but that freaks me out more than the spiders, I think.

Since I am just getting into using essential oils for everything, I started to research whether there was a particular scent that spiders hate that is safe for kids and pets. I combined a few and came up with my own spray. I have to say…my house smelled nice after!

Homemade Spider Spray

spider spray

 Ingredients

  • Peppermint Essential Oil (I used the Young Living brand)
  • Dish Soap
  • White Vinegar
  • Water
  • Spray bottle

Directions

  1. Fill a spray bottle (mine is 12-16 oz) with warm water, almost full.
  2. Put 5 drops of peppermint essential oil in the bottle.
  3. Add a squirt of dish soap and a dash of white vinegar.
  4. Put the sprayer on, shake it up and spray away!

The dish soap is important because it allows the oil to mix more evenly. I made sure to spray around the entire perimeter of my family room and first floor. I paid close attention to the area around doors and windows. You’ll want to do this once a week or once every other week.

Why Does This Work?

This spider spray works because in all of my research, I read that spiders do not like the smell/taste of vinegar, peppermint or citrus. I decided to give peppermint a whirl. I figured it smelled nice, spiders hate it and peppermint oil enhances mental alertness…BONUS for me!

Young Living Essential Oils for Focusing and Hyper-Activity Help

When we made the medication for our son, it was one of the hardest decisions we ever had to make. On one had, we knew we had to stop because the side effects were not good for him, but on the other hand, the unknown was scary.

How was he going to do in school?

Were we doing the right thing?

What if we can’t find something to help him?

After a lot of research, I decided to become a Young Living Essential Oils Wholesale Distributor. I ordered the premium kit and was very excited to get started. Here are the oils in the Premium kit:

I was a tad overwhelmed at first, but after a lot of research, I decided to use the following oils from the Premium kit to help with his focusing:

  • Peace and Calming
  • Valor
  • Frankincense
  • Peppermint
  • Lavender

Morning Routine

  •  Frankincense on the back of the neck, up high on the neck.
  • Peppermint over top of the Frankincense. Once I added in peppermint, we started to see a little bit better concentration from him.
  • Peace and Calming on his big toes.
  • Valor on his big toes.

Evening Routine

  • Lavender on his big toes or on the back of his neck.

I used to have to give him a sleep aid (approved by his doctor) every night in order for him to go to sleep. And even then, it only worked half the time. He just had way too much going through his mind at night once his medication had worn off. The very first night I put Lavender on his big toes and he was able to wind down in about 10 minutes! He now goes to sleep by about 8:30 pm every night…before he was not falling asleep until 11:30 pm or later.

Are the Oils Helping?

For us, they are. Is everything perfect? Of course not, but what child is perfect? He’s doing well in school still and I’ve gotten several reports from his teacher that he’s had some really good days. One thing we are working with him on is to not be argumentative. He doesn’t understand that when an adult tells him to do something, anything and everything he says or does AFTER they tell him, is arguing. For example, if a teacher says “please hand me that book now” because they aren’t supposed to be reading at that time (she’s giving instructions and they have nothing to do with the graphic novel he is reading), then you hand them the book. Saying “but I’m…” with a slight attitude tone to your voice, is being argumentative.

I am all for my kids being strong individuals who can stand up for themselves, but right now, at seven and nine, they need to learn the right time to say something and this wasn’t one of them. In his head, he was done with his work, but in reality he wasn’t because the teacher was giving further directions.

At any rate, I am pleased with how things are going with him. I have an order coming at the end of the week with a couple other oils that I’ve read really good things about for people with focusing issues. I will update after we’ve used them for awhile.

Have You Tried Essential Oils Yet?

A couple weeks ago I had to make the decision to stop my sons ADHD medication. He was having a lot of not so great side effects. I didn’t want to put him on a different stimulant medication because the likelihood of him having issue with that medication is pretty high. His doctor told me about non-stimulant medication, but I didn’t like what I read about the potential side effects. I decided to take a more natural, non-medication approach to helping my son. And I saw this study having to do with a natural approach using Matricaria chamomilla (commonly known as chamomile) and it solidified in my mind that it was time for me to try this route.

I have several friends using essential oils, but I have to be honest, I didn’t believe it. However, after researching a couple different companies that my friends are apart of, I decided to go with Young Living.

It was definitely a no brainer for me to become a wholesale member! Since I didn’t have to sell anything, but could if I wanted to, saving money on something that I wanted to try for my sons focusing issues, was definitely the right choice. As a wholesale member, you need to pick a starting kit. Take a look at your options…

Again, it was a no brainer. I had to get the Premium Kit. Even if I never decided to take part in the business side of Young Living, I was getting the most for my money with the Premium Kit. So I purchased the kit and waited impatiently for it to arrive. Even though I was excited for my kit to arrive, I was still a little unsure about whether or not this would work, but I had to try it.

While I waited for my kit to arrive, I researched everything you can do with essential oils. I have been dealing with a lot of pain in my wrist. The first thing I did was put Pan Away on my wrist. I kid you not, my pain was gone within 5 minutes. It’s been 5 days and I still have no pain! My husband, the huge skeptic, had me put some Pan Away on his knee that was really hurting him and yet again, it took his pain away in about 5 to 10 minutes!

Stopping ADHD Medication in Kids

My son has ADHD…I’ve never tried to hide that and I am not ashamed of that. I talk openly about it because it is who he is and I truly believe, though I know some people don’t and it is very annoying to me, that he cannot help his ADHD just like someone with Autism or some other disorder they are born with, can’t help it. It is just who they are. I accept that. When my son was diagnosed, I had to make the decision on whether or not I wanted to try medication or not. I opted to try medication along with a healthy diet and keeping him active. Medication was working fine for him (with the exception of when we tried Adderall…that was a mess). Everything was fine until now. Now I am considering stopping ADHD medication.

Stopping ADHD Medication

Over the last six months I began to notice my sons personality changing. He was no longer happy and carefree at home. Instead, he was extremely aggressive and always angry. I started Googling his medication with the words “anger” and “aggression”. I read that if a child who was not previously aggressive or angry all the time and they suddenly start behaving in that manner, then you should talk to your doctor and consider stopping with the medication.

After further research, I realized that my son had several other side effects that were directly related to his medication:

  • Extremely cold hands and feet
  • Stomach pains
  • Occasionally complaining of his chest hurting
  • Insomnia

I immediately called his doctor and they were able to get me in first thing the following morning. After talking with her, we decided that stopping ADHD medication was the right decision. She recommended some non-stimulant options, but I was not keen on giving him blood pressure medication (Intuniv) when it specifically says the child must drink a lot of fluids (not something my son does…I’m always having to tell him to drink more water) and the child cannot become overheated. He plays football and lacrosse, two sports that requires a helmet, therefore he has a greater chance of overheating. Another medication, Strattera, was recommended, however I have opted to not try that one either. The side effects are just not worth it to me.

So Now What?

We decided stopping ADHD medication for now is something we need to try. I am giving him fish oil daily and I am looking into alternative treatments for him. I started looking into essential oils. I have  lot of friends that swear by them. After researching a little more and talking to a friend of mine, I decided to become distributor for Young Living. I am very anxious to get my starter kit in the mail to begin trying the different oils and learning more about it. As I learn, I will be sure to share everything I learn and if works for us!

I’m not expecting a miracle. But if I can do something to help him in anyway, I have to do it and I will do it. So far it has been four days without medication and my aggressive and angry boy, something he was every single day, has not been around. Our mornings have been VERY calm; I haven’t had to yell and scream to keep them moving, in fact, the amount of yelling has decreased to almost non-existent! And he’s sleeping! My son hasn’t gone to sleep before 11 or 11:30 pm for the last several weeks! I’m cautiously optimistic that things will be OK.
