If you’ve been following along with my blog, then you know about my diabetes diagnosis. I’ve been less than thrilled with my primary care doctor for quite awhile. He’s one of those that likes to tell his patients that everything is fine when you have a question. For example, my kids saw him too (he’s a family practice doc) and I had read an article that said that ADHD and anemia can go hand in hand. When I asked him to test Zachary for his iron level, the doctor told me that Zachary is fine…no need to test. However, when I saw the specialist for his ADHD, she wanted to do some blood work and lo and behold, he was MAJORLY anemic.

So anyway, I found a new primary care doctor and I really like her a lot. She really listened to what I had to say, answered questions and told me that she wanted to check a few things along with my glucose level after eating a meal. I got those test results back today. She was very pleased with my glucose level and told me to keep up the good work with the diabetic diet. But then she told me my vitamin d level was VERY low. It was a 9. They like it to be over 30…preferably 50 or higher. So while I am able to keep my sugar level under control with diet and exercise, I have to take a prescription for vitamin d. 50,000 units of vitamin d once a week for 8 weeks and then 1000 units a daily after that.
50,000 units?!? That seems crazy high, but after googling it, I found that it is pretty normal for people with such low vitamin d. I also read that such a low vitamin d can cause things like glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, type 1 or 2 diabetes, obesity, etc.
I wonder how long I have been so deficient in vitamin d. Long enough to gain a bunch of weight, not be able to lose it, and get my sugar all out of whack, most likely.
At least I have a few answers now. Apparently after I start taking it and my vitamin d level rises, I will start to feel even better. I can’t wait! I already feel better just cutting out carbs! I guess we’ll see!

I wish I wasn't such a carb-a-holic – my diet would be sooo much easier.

Thanks for the reminder.
I've been overweight and unable to loose weight unless I starve myself. Also diagnosed with diabetes in 2009 and have lost 40 lbs since then, mostly by cutting out sugar laden soft drinks I'm sure. I'm going to mention the Vitamin D to my doc when I go next week and see what he says.

ugh, that sucks. I hope that with the vit. D you're able to much better handle the diabetes.

Hmm, maybe I should get my Vit D checked out too, I'm pretty sure it's low, I'm also diabetic and trying to loose weight, have lost 57lbs so far.
