When my husband started his new job where he is at currently, it was a huge eye opener when it came time for him to fill out the paperwork for insurance and life insurance. I never knew how much was taken out of each paycheck for all the different things. Being a stay-at-home parent and not getting a paycheck, those are the little details I really never paid much attention to. When it came time for him to mark down whether or not we wanted him to take out a life insurance policy on me, I told him not to do it. I didn’t want even more money, even it it was just a couple dollars, to come out of his weekly paycheck for me. I mean, really…I am a stay-at-home parent. Why do I need a life insurance policy?
After reading, Why Stay-at-Home Parents Need Life Insurance, I started to see the issue of me having a life insurance policy in a whole different light. Let’s make a list of the things I, as a stay-at-home parent, do on a daily basis:
- Caregiver
- Cook
- Clean
- Homework with the kids
- Run Errands
- Drive to school, sports or other extracurricular activities
- Laundry
- Grocery Shopping
If something were to happen to me tomorrow, my husband would need the extra funds to be able to cover having someone else take care of those jobs so that my kids life remained as normal as possible. Not to mention, with his work schedule and the way he travels for work, just care-giving for my children alone, would cost him an arm and a leg. The main reason I left my job last April was because the amount I would be paying to have my children cared for after school before I could get there to pick them up literally cost almost my entire monthly paycheck. And don’t even BEGIN to get me started on that man’s grocery shopping ability. He buys things on a whim and ends up spending way more than he budgeted. It’s nuts!

My husband has life insurance, but I don’t. These are good things to consider.

I am a stay at home mom. I have a teeny tiny life insurance policy, but I am sure it won’t be what my husband would need to cover the expenses.
