Yesterday was probably the worst day I’ve had in a very long long time. On Wednesday I was put on Bactrim because I had a UTI. Now I’m no stranger to UTI’s. I had them eight out of the nine months I was pregnant with Bella. She’s now almost seven and I think I’ve only had one since she’s been born. If you’ve never had a UTI, count yourself lucky!
Anyway, I called my doctor and they prescribed Bactrim and Pyridium for me. I took the first Bactrim and I literally had to fight to keep it down. It was nuts. The same thing happened when I took the second and third pill. After the third pill, I had the following issues that I DID NOT have prior to starting Bactrim:
- Sore, swollen throat
- Headache
- Rash on my arms and legs
- Felt like I was breathing through a straw
- White streak on the inside of my cheeks
- Tingly lips
- Itchy from head to toe
As I was sitting at Zachary’s football practice, I called the on-call service for my doctors office and they told me to get over to Urgent Care because they thought I was having an allergic reaction to Bactrim. So off I went after getting Bella situated at my moms and Zack taken care of at Football practice.
After waiting hours, I was seen and it was determined that I had an allergic reaction to the Bactrim. They gave me a breathing treatment, hoping that would help me breathe better. They also gave me Prednisone. After 40 minutes on the Prednisone my itchiness eased up and I could feel my throat not as swollen! It was awesome. So now I am on a new antibiotic and Prednisone.
After Googling “Bactrim allergies” I found that it is not all that uncommon and that there are MANY people who take Bactrim end up being allergic to it. So please…if you get prescribed Bactrim and you have ANY of the side effects I did, make sure you get to the doctor ASAP.

I’m so glad you are ok! How scary.
We are all allergic to any of the cillin type antibiotics and now I think I will stay away from this one too. We don’t resort to them very often, but sometimes we have to.

My docs office just called and they called in an epi pen and I have to carry that with me now.
