I went to school to be a teacher. I had all these grand plans of what I was going to do as a teacher, what my classroom was going to look like and all the apple themed things I was going to have. But then life happened. I was 9 months pregnant with my son when I graduated college and he was 2 months old when I interviewed for my first job. I was 1 of 3000 that applied for the same position. ONE position. Someone else got the job. But that was OK with me. I substitute taught for awhile and even had several long term sub positions. As I went back to get my masters, I got pregnant with my daughter and then it became abundantly clear…I was meant to be a stay at home mom. Working from home became my norm.

Working from Home
So now, almost 10 years later, I am working from home and very happy. Working from home has its benefits. I still make money, but I am also available to bake brownies for my sons class or volunteer my time in my daughters class. It’s a win-win situation for everyone!
When I was asked to review the book, Remote: Office Not Required I was instantly intrigued by it. I know how well it works for me (sometimes…sometimes the state of my house says otherwise…but we won’t go there), but I am curious to see what the book has to say about someone like my husband who works in the corporate world.
About the Book
An excerpt from the inside jacket of the book:
In the past decade, the “under one roof” model of conducting work has been steadily declining, owing to technology that is rapidly creating virtual workspaces. Today the new paradigm is “move work to the workers, rather than workers to the workplace”.
This makes complete since to me. Not only is it expensive for companies to travel people all over, but it also wastes time. Why spend hours traveling to a different office when you have an office in your home?
Sections in the Book
This book is broken up into several different sections that address all the things you need to know to successfully work from home and have a remote business. Those categories are:
- The Time is Right for Remote Work
- Dealing with Excuses
- How to Collaborate Remotely
- Beware the Dragons
- Hiring and Keeping the Best
- Managing Remote Workers
- Life as a Remote Worker
All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book. If you would like more information about this book or another book, Rework, which is written by the same authors, visit their website, 37Signals.com.
