It amazes me to see some of the things that kids are asking for nowadays. When I was my sons age (9) I was happy with a Lite BriteĀ and a few My Little Ponies. But now kids are asking for ipads, ipods, cell phones, etc. I didn’t get my first cell phone until I started college and even then, I had very few minutes, that it was only used for emergencies only. And of course, my son wants a cell phone. He asks us, almost daily, when we will be getting him one. My answer is always the same, “when you can pay for it”.

I’m half joking with him. I mean, we will get him a cell phone when we see it fit for him to have one, but believe me, I am not looking forward to adding that expense in. I already pay enough for my cell phone! However, I just recently became aware of Tracfone, a no contract cell phone service. You have zero bills, zero contracts…that means absolutely no surprises for you!
How Does Tracfone Work?
It’s easy! Simply visit their website and choose the location that you will be using the phone in most. Once you’ve entered your zip code, you are ready to start shopping for your phone. Each of their smartphones runs the Android operating system. The phones range in price from $9.99 to $99.99. So definitely affordable! Shoot…all kids want to do is play games and text, right?!?
Once you’ve chosen your phone, you are ready to add service to it. You do this by purchasing airtime cards and data cards. These can be purchased at Walmart, Best Buy and I think I’ve even seen them at gas stations. So you can determine how many minutes and how much data you want to give your kids each month.
My Thoughts
I was sent the Tracfone ZTE Valet smartphone. Setting it was very easy and only took about 10 minutes. I’ve had an Android phone in the past, so I was able to attach my Google Play account with the phone and had access to all of my apps I previously had. My only issue…I couldn’t figure out what my cell phone number was! I had to call my regular cell phone to find out!
I am pretty impressed with this little phone. I think this would be a perfect stepping stone for a tween before they get on their parents plan. Since you are able to control exactly how many minutes they use a month, it will begin to teach them responsibility and make them aware of how much they are using. Once the minutes or data runs out, it runs out. There are no overages, etc.
So if you are looking for a phone, but don’t want to be locked into a contract for the next two years, Tracfone is the way to go!

I started with a Tracfone back many years ago and had it for two years! Was a great starter phone but I love the options available now, nothing like the options I had way back then!
