Picture this…it’s a hot summer day and you’re standing in your Nanna and Nannu’s (Maltese for grandmother and grandfather) backyard with your dad. As you lean against the house, you start to smell an overwhelmingly strong spearmint smell. You start looking around, but can’t figure out where that smell is coming from. And then, all of a sudden, you know exactly where that spearmint smell is coming from.
The house. My grandpa was putting his gum in between the bricks of his house. Probably because he was out of caulk. You see, when Nannu quit smoking, he replaced that with chewing spearmint gum. I think that by the time my grandparents moved from their house to Florida, my grandpa replaced the caulk at the back of his house with spearmint gum! Whenever I chew gum, I can’t help but think about that day we realized he was doing that AND if the new owners were ever sitting out in their backyard and smelled spearmint. Did they know where it came from? Were they standing with their noses pressed up against the house?
I have so many childhood memories, but nothing made me laugh (and still make me laugh) like the “Nannu gum story”! So what about you? Do you have a funny, must tell story from your childhood? I’d love to hear it!! Leave me a comment with your story!

Oh my gosh that is crazy!! I would love to know if the new owners found that, super creative idea to replace caulking.

This is such a great idea. I love those memories. I have such great memories of my grandparents too.

I have so many memories that are more like snapshots. Sitting on Grandma’s back stoop with an ice cream cone, watching Grandpa light a pipe. My Godmother’s dog with wheels. So many nice moments.

I have been remembering a lot of random childhood memories lately as they relate to things my kids are doing. For instance they found a caterpillar and I remembered bringing caterpillars to school for a pet show because I didn’t have a pet, and my teacher wanted to flush them down the toilet because she thought they were gross!
I have heard that smells are very strongly related to memories and that often trigger our memories. Great memory!
