One habit I want to instill in my kids, besides eating healthy and exercising, is to drink more water. When they were little I was never one to buy juice. They pretty much only drank milk and water. When they started school I wanted to continue the theme of drinking water during the day, however, I got pressured (from my own mind…darn mind) into buying various sugar-filled juice boxes. I finally went back to water a couple of years ago. Ironically enough, they actually told me they preferred the water too! Our favorite is the little Nestlé® Pure Life® Junior water bottles!
This year my son is in 6th grade. I asked around and the general consensus was that most of the middle school kids, boys especially, pack their lunch in paper bags. I thought this was a good idea since my son has a habit of throwing his lunch box away. Yep, he threw three away in one year. Do you know how hard it is to find a decent lunch box in January? It’s hard. I will admit, I was a little freaked out about not putting an ice pack in his lunch, but everyone (including my son) assured me that the food was still good by lunchtime. In fact, my son told me he liked his food better this way because he never liked an ice cold sandwich!
I don’t buy a lot of junk food, much to my children’s dislike. I know what they are like when they eat junk and are home with me. I really don’t want them at school on some sort of sugar roller coaster. So my son’s lunch typically looks like the one above: ham and turkey sandwich, string cheese, fruit, hard boiled eggs, and veggie chips (he thinks they are just chips, but in fact they are chips made out of potatoes, spinach, broccoli and peas. I win!). For his drink, he always gets a water. Sometimes, I give him the small water, but other times I give him the bigger water bottle so he can use it to drink throughout the day.
My two crazy kids love to drink water and yours can too! According to a recent survey* conducted by Nestlé® Pure Life®, here a few tips by Robin Plotkin that will get your kids drinking more water:
- Lead by example. Each time Mom or Dad goes for a drink of water, ask your children if they’d like a drink of water too. Soon it will be the kids asking the parents if they’d like to join them for a water break!
- Prep a week’s worth of bottled water, like Nestlé® Pure Life® Purified Water, for lunches or on-the-go events at one time. Store in the freezer and remove when needed to stock lunches, backpacks or gym bags. The water will be ready to drink when your child is ready!
- Have cups, straws, lids and other drinking “equipment” available to provide to your kids to make drinking water more fun. Empower them to fill their own cups of water and praise them when they do.
Unfortunately, it was found, in that same survey* conducted by Nestlé® Pure Life® that moms don’t give regular water reminders. Barely half of the moms (52%) regularly remind their child to drink water. And, as a result, it was found that kids who drink less than 4 glasses of water a day are more likely to request soda, juice, and sports drinks (76%). If that doesn’t tell you the importance of getting our children to drink more water, then I don’t know what does!
The Ripple Effect
These crazy kids love to drink water, which is great for me.
