I am now blood sugar testing 5 times a day and keeping a log for my doctor 🙁

This past weekend I had an episode where I got a blinding headache, blurry vision, and I felt very nauseous. I googled and realized I was probably have high sugar issues. So I called my doc first thing Monday morning, got in for an appointment and left the office with a glucose monitor and a prescription for more test strips and needles. My doctor advised me to test my blood on the following schedule:
- First thing upon waking up
- 1hr or 2hrs after each meal (one day I do 1 hr after a meal and the next day I do 2 hrs and alternate)
- Before I go to bed.
Let me tell you…I was horrified. The thought of pushing a button and making a needle stab me (and knowing it was happening) freaked me out. But I got past it and have been following directions religiously. The monitor I am using is the Bayer’s Contour Blood Glucose Monitoring System. So far I like it…I mean shoot…it was free from my doctors office and it does what it needs to do.
My doctor wants me to test my sugar for a couple weeks first before making a decision to put me on medicine. I am still sticking to the Diabetic diet religiously as well. Regardless of what comes about testing my sugar, I know without a doubt that I have to make the lifestyle change. I have to say…sometimes I still get really bummed out when it comes to making food choices, but it is getting easier. I went to Buffalo Wild Wings for kids night this evening with my kids and rather than ordering something I probably shouldn’t have…I ordered naked tenders a.k.a. strips of grilled chicken breast with NO sauce at all. I did get a side of the Asian Zing and very had maybe a teaspoon of it (very spicy!). Maybe not my first choice for dinner, but it was good!
I’ll keep you all posted on what ends up happening from all this blood testing. So far my numbers are semi-OK…except when I wake up…that number is always high. So we’ll see what the doctor says.
