I want my kids to enjoy reading as much as I did (and still do). One of the things I did to help foster their blossoming love of reading was to purchase a giant bookcase from IKEA to put in the hall way upstairs so ALL of the children books can go on the bookshelf and the kids have a universal place to go to get a book and share their books. So far it’s working out great…other than the fact that I almost always have books on the floor in the hallway!
About Scary School
Scary School by Derek Taylor Kent (or Derek the Ghost) is about a 11 year old boy who just recently died at school. You see, in Scary School, monsters and normal kids roam the halls together. It’s considered a HUGE success when you can make it to lunch with all your limbs intact! The characters in this book are hilarious. My favorites being Dr. Dragonbreath and Principal headcrusher.
In Scary School, the school is chosen to host the annual Ghoul Games (Junior Olympics event) where the winners get to EAT the losers! Together, the monsters and normal kids of the school must work together to defeat the monsters of the other Scary School. It’s do or die time for the normal kids.
What I liked about Scary School is that not only does it give children an opportunity to use their imagination, but it also shows them that smarts and goodness ALWAYS prevails over bullies. In a time where it seems like bullies are taking over schools all over America, giving the victims not only the comedic relief of a book like Scary School, but also the chance to see that they can win when it comes to bullies…that’s huge, in my opinion.
