So I’ve been reading an article on how people are signing up to take one-way tickets to Mars. Yep. You read that right. One-way tickets. Basically the company, Mars One will be sending four people up to Mars with no guarantee that they will get a ride back to Earth. The plan is that every two years, more people will join them. Sounds weird, doesn’t it? But I haven’t gotten to the best part yet. It’s going to basically be a big reality show. Everyone in the world will get the opportunity to see what is going on up there on Mars! For this reality show junkie…I can tel you, I would definitely watch it!
However, there are a few things wrong with this entire operation. While it’s been a long time since I’ve been in school, I did minor in science!
- Mars is located further away from the sun than Earth so it is much colder. They’ll have to pack extra warm clothes.
- Because it’s so cold, it often looks like it’s snowing, but that’s not snow…it’s frozen carbon dioxide, a.k.a dry ice!
- Since there is so much carbon dioxide in the air, they would have to bring their own oxygen.
Now I won’t be signing up to go on this mission, but thousands of people have. I really don’t know what the qualifications are, but after reading about this, all I could think about was sending that Boston Marathon bomber up there. It’d be similar to that Lockout movie where prisoners are sent to a new prison that’s in orbit and the prisoners are frozen. Sending terrorists to mars with no way back to Earth seems OK to me. Though…that movie ended in chaos, so maybe that wouldn’t be the best idea.
Seriously though…I am a little surprised by this “mission”. I mean sure, as long as I could remember, they’ve always talked about “life on Mars”, but to actually go through with it and send people there and then not guarantee that you’d bring them back? It seems like a death mission to me.
