My kids are six and nine and they are much savvier with a computer than I was at their age…shoot, I don’t even know if we had a computer yet. One of the highlights of their day at school is when they get the opportunity to go to the computer lab. It doesn’t matter if they are playing a game on a website or typing a paragraph, they just enjoy being on a computer. I really can’t blame them! However, I do worry about them and some of the different things they may come across online. It doesn’t matter if they are downloading music or playing games, they need to know how to stay safe and why.
I ran across an article on the Norton website that has some great tips on how to keep kids safe online. A few of the tips I really liked are:
- Protect your computer with a good antivirus program.
- Teach your kids to NOT click on links or ads. My kids are FOREVER clicking on ads.
- Teach your kids to NOT share passwords. My son used to come home telling me how his friend gave him his password to a website they all like to play. Don’t do that!
- Set rules and limits. My kids are only allowed to play a certain amount of time a day and they are not permitted to play on a school night.
YouTube seems to be a HUGE thing for kids these days. Which is fine…but you have to be careful. My son typed in something innocent, yet pulled up a girl in a skimpy bikini, shaking what her mama gave her. So not appropriate. So one of my biggest tips I can give you is to set your parental settings on YouTube and other sites your kids may visit.
Now…one of the things I do is limit their time online. They don’t need to be on a computer all day every day. With parental control programs, you can keep your kids safe from online bullies and stalkers; check out exactly what your kids are doing online and even get these updates sent to your cell phone; set computer time limits for your kids; and, if they have a mobile device, you can set limits on that as well.
