Visiting Rome with Kids
Gladiator training
The Coliseum might be enough to get your children excited, but often it’s the stories of the gladiators that really bring it to life. On a trip to Rome’s gladiator school, children will get to step inside history as they don traditional tunics and helmets and yield mock weapons. Kids will also learn about Roman history and life as a gladiator as well as receiving a certificate at the end of their training. The experience is a great warm-up to visiting the coliseum, where a good guidebook will point out all the gory facts that kids will be most interested in.
Tasty Treats
The fact that Rome is one of the pizza and ice cream capitals of the world is enough to get almost any kid excited.
You’ll find gelato bars on almost every street, where a variety of weird and wonderful flavours await eager children. Rome restaurants are notoriously child-friendly at any time of day, so you don’t need to worry about where to eat, either. The Said Vintage Chocolate Factory is also sure to be a hit where you can take a look at the antique chocolate making machinery and go wild in the gift shop.

Museum Explora
Rome’s children’s museum has been recently renovated and is all about hands-on, immersive experiences. A miniature town has been created where kids get to play at being grown-ups as they shop for groceries, visit the bank and climb aboard a fire truck. The experience is best for younger children, although the museum officially caters for anyone under twelve.
A spooky walking tour
For kids who are into their ghost stories a spooky walking tour of the city is sure to get their imagination fired up. Tours take place in the evening, when you’ll get to see many of Rome’s major sights whilst kids become immersed in the spooky stories told by the guide.
Exploring the Catacombs
Rome’s underground catacombs also provide a thrill for kids who are inspired by the spooky side of life. The Crypt of the Capuchin monks is decorated with the bones of thousands of monks, all arranged in intricate patterns.
Taking your kids on a city break to Rome can be a fun-packed adventure. By enjoying some of these activities you can inspire their imagination and enjoy one of the world’s most enigmatic historic locations.
