Teaching kids to save money is not an easy task. They see commercial after commercial of things they want. I feel like I am forever telling them that “money doesn’t grow on trees“. It’s kind of annoying! I am lucky in that my kids school district offers a pretty great program to help instill saving money in kids. They’ve partnered with a local Credit Union and once every other week, a representative from the Credit Union comes to the school and the kids make deposits in their very own bank account! This program starts in Kindergarten and follows them through 12th grade. If they leave the district or decide not to participate, the account and the money is theirs!
My kids get excited to see their statements come each month and see how much money they have in their account. The money they deposit into the account is either money they earn through chores or money that is given to them at Christmas or their birthday. I get it broken into five dollar bills for them to deposit (I believe the max you can deposit in elementary school is $10 at a time).

Our kids don’t need their own bank account to start learning about saving. All they need is something to put their money in. Get them a piggy bank and they are halfway there! While a plain piggy bank would work, wouldn’t it be much more fun to decorate your own piggy bank?!? Um…yes! Wikki Stix knew this and that is why they came up with the great Designer Piggy Bank!
What are Wikki Stix?
Wikki Stix are super cool and something EVERY mom needs to have in her purse to occupy kids at restaurants (some restaurants even give them out instead of crayons), on a road trip or a rainy day at home! Your kids teachers may even use them in the classroom! Wikki Stix are strips of wax covered yarn. They can be used for a multitude of craft projects and the nice thing is, you don’t need glue…these are perfect for me because I hate glue! Simply apply a little bit of pressure with your fingertips and they stick together or to things without making a mess!
“…made of hand-knitting yarn enhanced with a microcrystalline food-grade, non-toxic wax, the kind used in bubble gum and lipstick. They do not contain latex, gluten, nor peanut or other nut oils or byproducts making them an ideal creative activity toy for children with allergies”
Wikki Stix are so popular, they are found on FIVE continents! That’s some serious popularity!
About the Designer Piggy Bank
This cute little ceramic piggy comes with 72 colorful Wikki Stix, an easy to remove stopper (you know…in case the ice cream man comes down the street…everyone loves the ice cream man and we have to have a little treat once in awhile!), and hours of designing entertainment! The nice thing about this project is that it doesn’t have to be permanent. Let’s say your child is saving up for a bike. They could make a picture of a bike out of Wikki Stix as motivation to save for that bike. Once they get their bike, they can save for something else and make a new picture! Bella had a blast with it…check out her piggy…
She wanted her piggy bank to have the same glasses she has…black glasses with hot pink stems (hers are hot pink on the inside of the stems)! The Wikki Stix Designer Piggy Bank retails for $24.95 and it makes a great gift for any occasion! Not sure what to get your kids or niece and nephew for Christmas? Pick this up for them! My seven year old had fun with it…shoot, my 10 year old was disappointed he didn’t have one to decorate! It’s a great gift for anyone!
