When I got married, I could not cook at all. Like…at all. I was terrible. Thinking back to all the horrible meals my husband choked down just so my feelings wouldn’t be hurt, it’s embarrassing. But he’s a good guy. What he doesn’t know (or maybe he does) is that by doing that, he gave me the confidence to become a much better cook. He gave me the confidence to feel like I could host a holiday and not be embarrassed any longer by my cooking ability. I’ve hosted several holiday’s over the years. These are a few of my hosting Thanksgiving tips and tricks.

Hosting Thanksgiving
Like I said before, I wasn’t always the greatest of cooks. There was this one time I tried making chicken on the stove. The outside was burnt to a crisp and the inside was raw. Raw. It was gross. The first time I made a turkey for Thanksgiving, I left one of the bags of stuff inside the turkey. I did not know there were two bags (tip #1 for turkey roasting newbies). Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. There are no gift expectations. It’s just good food, friends and family. For the most part, it’s a relaxing holiday.
Planning the Meal
The first thing I do when I am planning my Thanksgiving menu, is think about the food various food allergies I am dealing with. Typically, it’s just me with the food allergies, so that makes it easy! But, if you do have people coming to your house that have food allergies, you want to make sure you are aware of their allergies. Have a conversation with them about how you can safely make food that they can eat. If their allergies are super severe, they will most likely bring food for themselves to be on the safe side.

Don’t feel like you need to prepare the entire meal yourself. Most likely, your guests will ask you what they can bring. Let them bring something. The first few times I hosted, I always felt like I needed to make everything. Not anymore! I’m not the greatest at making desserts. So that is the first thing I gladly hand over to someone else! Letting others help with the meal takes stress off of you. You may feel like you can do it all, and you probably can, but you don’t have to. It’s your holiday too! Enjoy it!

The Hosting Thanksgiving Extras
New for this year, we are using heavy duty, Thanksgiving themed paper plates. The worst part of hosting is the cleanup. You can use paper plates, plastic silverware and plastic cups or just the paper plates. The silverware and the cups are easy to throw in the dishwasher. Again, why make more work for yourself? Totally not necessary and I promise you, no one is going to judge you if you use paper plates. If they do, then they can host next year!
If you are not a fan of leftovers, then pick up some of those meal prep containers and send people home with a doggy bag! The meal prep containers are super easy and inexpensive, so you don’t have to worry about getting the containers back from them. Just send them on their merry way!
