Poor Zoe broke a toe

I swear this puppy is something else. The other day I noticed that she was limping. I called the vet and the vet told me to wait overnight and if she is still doing it, then to bring her in. So I did just that, making sure Zoe rested as much as possible. The next day she was still limping so I took her in.

When feeling around on the foot she is favoring, it was apparent that one particular toe is bothering her. Well the vet told me I had a couple options…

  • Pay $200 and have her foot x-rayed
  • Pay an additional $166 to have it splinted
  • Take her home with pain pills, cage rest her and possibly wrap her foot.

I asked the vet tech if I was being a bad pet owner if I just took her home with the pain pills and wrapped her foot and rested her. The tech assured me that I was NOT being a bad pet owner and that this is not a serious injury and most of the time the splint causes more issues for the dog because they hate it.

So I chose the pain pill/cage rest route and brought her home. I am happy to say that a day later, after really resting a lot in her cage (with a blanket over three sides of it like a bird!?!), AND wrapping her foot, Zoe is doing much better. The hard part is keeping her calm when out of her cage. I mean she is only 15 or 16 weeks old. So she is ALL puppy ALL the time. But she’s doing well! It was really agonizing for me to make the decision as to what to do. I really like the vet I saw and the vet tech that was there. She was very honest with me and I liked that she didn’t just push the x-rays and stuff.

Now the real question is, how the hell did this dog break a toe? We’re not sure. She loves to run in the backyard where there is some ice from all the melting and refreezing of the snow, she slides some on our wood floor so she could have possibly slid into a cabinet or table leg, or jumping on and off the couch, or maybe my husband or one of us stepped on her foot but none of us (Dan or I) can recall doing that so who knows.

Anyhoo…poor poochy 🙁

Poor puppy! I hope it’s doing much much better now. We have a cat that we had less than a week before we had to take him to the vet because he got an abscess on the side of his neck. It cost SO much money.. never have I been so thankful to have credit. lol
