The Grass is NOT Always Greener

I was at Meijers today getting some food for my daughter. She was just recently re-diagnosed allergic to milk and all milk proteins. I say “re-diagnosed” because the allergist I saw last summer told us to eliminate for x amount of time and then reintroduce the dairy back into her system. We did that and things seemed to be OK. Until now…they are worse than ever.

SO…anyway, I was at Meijers trying to find stuff that she could have as snacks besides just fruits and veggies. She’s 2. Fruits and veggies are NOT going to cut it for snacks. So I’m standing their in the breakfast aisle, on the phone with a company questioning an ingredient in their food. A woman overhears me and waits to talk to me. Now mind you, at this point I was feeling really sorry for Bella. I mean this kid LOVES cheese…LOVES pizza…and now it’s all taken away. This woman approaches me and we start talking. Come to find out, are you ready for this? Her son can only eat 9 (NINE!) foods. Nine. I was stunned. He’s almost 6 years old and has to be on a special medicated formula (probably for nutrients he can’t get from food) and it is about $3000 a month out of pocket. They have been fighting their insurance to pay it for quite some time. How rotten of the insurance company. This is something this poor child NEEDS to live a healthy life.

My conversation with her made me feel a little better about Bella and her allergy. Sure it sucks, but man…it could be a whole hell of a lot worse.

that’s crazy…I’ve heard of things like that….but never met anyone in person….and you never know…I was allergic to any dairy when I was young…but by the time I hit the 5 grade I had out grown it….so there is hope.

Here’s to hoping your little one outgrows her allergy at least a little bit as she gets older. My oldest has a red dye sensitivity, and you wouldn’t believe some of the things they put red dye in. You’ll also be amazed at what’s in food in general as you start reading labels. At least I was because I had never really read labels before.
