For a couple weeks now, I’ve participated in a series, 30 Things my Kids Need to Know. Last week I wrote about 3 fears I have. This week I am writing about my relationship with my spouse, their father.
When he and I met, we were both working at our local recreational center. He worked at the front desk; I was a lifeguard and taught swim lessons. Mr. Domestic Goddess asked me out a few times, I said no every time. Some may say I was playing hard to get, but quite honestly, I really wasn’t interested in dating at the moment. I was in my first semester of college…I just wanted to get used to that. But he kept asking. I finally said yes, figuring I would go on one date and be done with it. What I wasn’t expecting was to fall for him on our first date.
I can honestly say, after meeting Mr. Domestic Goddess and falling in love, I was the happiest I have ever been in my entire life. I think you can see if all over my face. We were so cute back then…in this picture I was 19 years old. A month or two before this picture was taken, Dan and I got engaged. We had only been dating 10 months. Some people thought we were crazy. One “friend” even told us that we wouldn’t last, but when you know, you know. A year and a half to two years later, we were married.
We’ve been together for almost 15 years and married for almost 12. It hasn’t always been easy, I doubt any marriage is, but I think we are so good together because we rarely go to bed mad at each other. We talk everything out, even if it means staying up all night. The funny thing is, someone could see us arguing and it may look like we are really mad at each other, but once we’ve said our peace, we are usually fine and laughing about something else. And laughing is key. We laugh about everything!
The best part of our entire relationship is that we compliment each other well. There are times I want to just sit next to him and read. He has no problem with that. He will watch some show I’m not interested in or play his video game. We are both doing exactly what we want, but still doing it together in some way.
This video clip from The Wedding Singer pretty much sums up our relationship!
