Holiday Traditions

Forming traditions for my children is HUGE to me.  25 years from now when they are starting their own families, I would love for them to be able to think back on their childhood and think about all the traditions we had and hopefully want to carry those traditions on in their own family.

One of our newer traditions is picking out our Christmas tree.  In the past, we have always had a fake Christmas tree that we decorated.  However, last year when we took the tree out of the box, it was broken.  Rather than spending at least $100 on another fake tree right before Christmas, we decided to go pick out a real tree from the Christmas tree lot.  The kids had a blast!  They ran all over that lot yelling to pick this tree and that tree.  It really was a lot of fun.  Being that it was our first year ever with a real tree, we picked on that the pine needles felt really soft…well while it felt nice, we won’t be picking that kind of tree again.  It had a hard time holding up some of our heavier ornaments.  But hey, you live and learn!

Once we get the Christmas tree home, we turn on some holiday music (usually the Chipmunks…the kids love the Chipmunks!) and we start putting out all of our Christmas decor.  My kids get very excited to see all of the nutcrackersand other items that they have not seen all year long.  In fact, one of the other traditions that started was that each child got a new nutcracker each year (though I’m not sure how long that will last since I will eventually run out of space to store and set out each nutcracker)!

One of the other traditions we do for our kids at Christmas time is allow them to open one present on Christmas Eve.  Now it’s not just any present.  The present they get to open from us on Christmas Eve is always the same.  It’s a new pair of Christmas themed pajamas.  That way on Christmas morning they are both wearing holiday themed pjs and it looks good in pictures.  Not to mention, they get very excited over the pjs!

What kind of holiday traditions to you have with your family?

Those are great traditions, we are only on our second year of Christmas with our little one. My son was 9 months old last Christmas. I definitely think the opening of 1 gift Christmas eve is something we will do this year…and actually starting Thanksgiving night we watch a Christmas movie almost every night.

We also are weird in the fact that we set up our tree the first weekend of November. It freaks many people out, but I don't like to just set up a tree for 25 days…we like to celebrate the season. This year I also made brownies when we set up the tree and I think listening to Christmas music while doing that makes it more fun.

My husband makes his french toast casserole Christmas morning and that is breakfast while we open gifts….so I guess we really do have a few traditions huh.
