“I have Cerebral Palsy. I walk funny and my balance is bad. I fall a lot. My hands shake, too. That means I’m not so good at carrying things. And if I drop stuff, sometimes it’s hard to just bend down and get it”. Shortly after speaking those words, Leigh Brill’s life change dramatically, but for the better.

You see, Leigh Brill, the author of A Dog Named Slugger has Cerebral Palsy. Like mentioned above, everyday tasks sometimes got in the way. Until she was introduced to Slugger…her four legged furry friend, who went everywhere with her for the next 10 years. Not only did Slugger aide Leigh in day to day activities like pick things up that she has dropped, help open heavy doors, but Slugger also helped her to find peace, love and a career.
I absolutely loved this book! It was very uplifting and showed how much service dogs and their handlers begin to depend on each other. Leigh Brill wrote A Dog Named Slugger with such emotion and description, that you were able to clearly see the bond that she had with Slugger. I truly find service dogs to be very interesting…even more so after reading this book. Their intelligence and ability to literally be the eyes, ears, hands and feet for people with disabilities is truly amazing.
