Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 REVIEW

With your laptop or computer, there is nothing worse than getting a virus.  A few years ago, I clicked on what I thought was a harmless link at a site I frequent often (and no…it’s not one of those sites silly!) and all of a sudden all this weird stuff started happening in front of my eyes.  It was like I was no longer controlling my computer.  Windows upon windows were opening up.  My virus protection software and firewall were immediately shut off.  Before I knew it, my computer was so out of control, there was nothing I could do but turn it off.  Unfortunately for me, I got a massive virus that literally destroyed my laptop and all my precious pictures of my daughters birth, etc.  I was devastated.

When I was asked to review the Kaspersky Internet Security 2011, I jumped at the chance.  I had heard very good things about their product, but unfortunately when I got my new laptop it came with a different virus protection software.  But that’s a thing of the past now!  The preloaded virus software has been removed and my computer is now being protected by Kaspersky!

For $79.95, you get a 1 year license that can be installed on up to 3 computers.  You can find it at retailers like Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart…I’ve even seen it at Costco.  Here are a few of the features about Kaspersky that make it so much better than those other virus protection softwares:

  • Desktop Security Gadget – This allows you to instantly see your protection status, drag and drop file scanning, and customizable one-click access to the reports and tools you use most.
  • Parental Controls – You ca ndo more than block your kids from inappropriate content coming in…prevent your family’s personal information from being sent out, by designating account numbers, addresses and more as “private”.  You can also limit the amount of time your child can spend on the computer or online every day.
  • Safe Run – Provides an added layer of protection for running suspicious or unknown programs and websites.  The Safe Run environment is completely walled -off from your data and PC settings, so you can “test drive” programs with total confidence that no harm will come to your system.
  • Surf Safely – At Kaspersky Lab, we keep “naughty and nice” list of websites.  We always block the sites that are bad, and we alert you when visiting sites that have been recently used to infect visitors…these sites are most likely to be used again for attacks.

October is “National Cyber Security Awareness” month.  Kaspersky is spreading awareness about cyber security by directing people to their webpage where they have 10 simple safety tips to stay safe online.  You can see them at their website or view them below.

 1
Got protection? This may seem like a no brainer, but security software is the new “black”. It helps you stay fully protected against malware, spyware, hackers and identity theft. And don’t forget to perform regular updates and scans.
 2
Password strength matters. Strong passwords include 8-14 upper and lower case characters and numbers. Be sure to avoid any words that are in the dictionary—they’re too easy for attackers to guess.
 3
Stay current! Remember that random program you downloaded to watch the funny video Aunt Sally sent? You probably haven’t updated that program since you watched, but guess what? That one program if left on its own, could leave your system vulnerable to outside attacks.
 4
Firewall is your friend. Current versions of Windows include a firewall that helps prevent malicious traffic from reaching your PC. Turn it on and leave it on.
 5
Click with care. If you’re checking your email or talking over IM, make it a practice to avoid clicking on links in messages from people you don’t know. These links could lead you to a malicious web site or even download malware onto your machine.
 6
Practice safe online shopping. When you’re going to buy those new killer shoes or the latest toy for your tike make sure you make purchases from a reputable online retailer. You should also look for a URL that starts with “https” and has the lock symbol before entering your credit card information.
 7
Socialize safely! By now we’ve probably all gotten a bad link or two sent to us over our favorite social network. Utilize your social network’s security settings to their optimum level. Do you really need anyone in your network to read every detail about your life?
 8
Keep your privates, private! A good rule of thumb: Don’t post anything you wouldn’t want to see on the front page of your local newspaper! This includes your personal phone number, email address and street address—or your vacation plans.
 9
Stomp out spam! Most Internet Service Providers & security software programs have anti-spam technologies. The spam blocker will help prevent fraudulent emails from showing up in your Inbox.
 10
Be careful where you surf. Open wireless networks are called “open” for a reason: anyone can connect, including attackers. If you have to use one, make sure you use VPN software to protect yourself from other people who want to see your wireless traffic.
Even though I received a copy of the Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 for the purpose of this review, my opinions are completely mine and I would recommend Kaspersky to anyone looking for a virus protection program for their computer.  In fact, shortly after I installed this on my computer, a friend of mine got a virus on her laptop and I told her what I am using on my computer and she is now using the same thing.  It really is user friendly and keeps my computer safe.
