Having a Mommy Freak Out

I’ve told you all before…I am FREAKED out about the dentist.  Cleanings are OK for me, but because I neglected to go for the past four years, I have a lot of issues that I am now paying for.  And when I go for fillings, I have to be drugged up with both Valium AND laughing gas.

So yesterday I took my son for his dental check-up.  He insisted on going back by himself…”I’m a big boy mommy.  I can do this by myself”.  So I let him.  I’d much rather sit on the comfy couch and read Us Weekly anyhow.  So I’m enjoying an article about Kate Hudson and how she’s knocked up and her boyfriend is cheating when the hygienist calls me back.

I instantly knew this meant bad news.  Why else would they ask me to come back?  And then she told me…he has a tiny cavity at the back of his mouth.  I start to sweat.  My hands shake.  Remember…I’ve got a HORRIBLE fear of the dentist.  So to hear that he has to go through something that terrifies me…freaks me the heck out.  The dentist came over and told me he would be fine.  It’s tiny, but in a tooth he’ll have until he’s about 12 so they need to fix it.  They’ll give him the gas…it’ll all be good.

But you don’t understand people.  IT WON’T BE GOOD.  Not at all.  The only appointment I could get was for tomorrow afternoon…when my husband, the sane one when it comes to the dentist, is at work.  I asked the dentist if I had to go back there with him.  The dentist instantly said “NO”.  They prefer to not have mom back there because it usually stresses the kids out.  Boy was I relieved.  Sure…if he freaks out, I’ll go back there.  I’d have to.  I’d have to suck it up…that’s what us moms do.  But boy oh boy am I hoping this is a piece of cake like it was when he had his tooth pulled.

Cross your fingers for me…I mean him tomorrow!  Zachary is excited to get to wear the piggy nose (gas mask) again!  The dentist explained the procedure to him and he is totally fine with.  Not sure how fine he’ll be when he hears the drill, but we’ll see.  I am just trying REALLY hard to now show ANY emotion at all because I do NOT want him to be afraid.  That is the last thing I want to do.

Aren’t they cute?!? 🙂
