Public Schools Requiring Laptops

A friend and I were talking over breakfast not too long ago and she told me that some schools are requiring student laptops.  Meaning…each student is required to have a laptop with them during the day.  I’m not sure how I feel about that.  The age of kids she was talking about was 6th grade and up.  Now I’m thinking about myself and 6th grade and there is NO WAY I would have trusted me with a laptop at that age.

Now college students…I think it is a MUST that they have a laptop during lectures.  I used a laptop all through college and it really helped me take notes more effectively.  Not only that, but I think it is good for college students to get use to using a laptop or tablet to take notes on since they will definitely use those skills once they are in the “real world” during business meetings with business laptops.  Shoot…my son’s principal was just telling me how much he loves having an ipad to take to his meetings and how useful it is.

Now I will admit…I do not know all the details about children needing laptops for school, but I really don’t think it’s a good idea.  When I was substitute teaching I had a long term sub position in a media class.  Every so often we would get the laptop cart out and the kids would work on various projects on the laptop.  But that was strictly in that classroom and the laptops returned to the cart immediately after class.  Did things get broken on the laptop…occasionally, but not as much as it would if kids were expected to carry it to and from home each day.

What are your thoughts?  Do schools in your area require laptops?
