Not much bothers me about getting older. First, I don’t care about getting gray hair or wrinkles…those are non-issues to me. However, something that absolutely terrifies me is getting Alzheimer’s. I can’t imagine knowing my family and friends one minute and not knowing who they are the next. Likewise, I would hate to put my kids or husband through that. Above all, my heart goes out to anyone that has to personally deal with this disease. I can only hope that we I will see a cure in my lifetime.

Chicken Soup for the Soul is well known for their collection of books on a variety of topics. I personally, really enjoy these books. First, they are a quick read that sometimes makes you feel inspired; secondly, they make you laugh; and finally, they sometimes they make you cry. Likewise, the same holds true with the most recent Chicken Soup for the Soul book I read…Chicken Soup for the Soul: Living with Alzheimer’s & Other Dementias. This book is filled with 101 stories of caregiving, coping and compassion.

About the Chicken Soup for the Soul Book

The book is broken up into 11 different chapters:

  • Accepting a New Reality
  • What Does it Feel Like?
  • Strategies and Tips for Coping
  • Next Steps and Tough Choices
  • Taking the Journey with Your Parent
  • Younger-Onset Alzheimer’s
  • In Sickness and In Health
  • The Lighter Side
  • New Ways to Make Connections
  • It Takes a Village
  • The Special Bond with Grandchildren

I especially liked the story called, Songs of Remembrance. As a result, I only hope that if I end up with this horrible disease, that the people around me will do the same that this mother’s child did for her! It truly was special. Above all, we need to remember that those dealing with Alzheimer’s are scared and need support from everyone around them. Not only those dealing with Alzheimer’s, but also their caregivers.
