When I saw this weeks topic, I almost skipped it. I’m not a runner. Like…at all. I wish I was. I even tried to do that couch to 5K program with high hopes that I would actually sign up and run a 5K. I made it through two weeks and then I had to stop. My knees couldn’t take it. I guess having little to no cartilage in my right knee is a bigger problem than I thought. But then I got to thinking…the best mile…I don’t need to take it so literally. It doesn’t have to be about running. For me, my best mile would have to be when I was diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic.

It was about a month or less before my 30th birthday. I have to admit, my first thought was, “are you kidding me? Diabetic…now? What about the cake?”. Â I will say, I was in denial for a bit and I ate whatever I wanted at my 30th birthday party…even cake. A lot of cake. My husband made my cake for me…
He did a great job, didn’t he?!? I enjoyed eating that cake, but the very next day I got very strict and followed the diet put together by my nutritionist. It was my goal that I would eventually be able to come off my medication and not be Type 2 Diabetic any longer. It was a long, hard road. The diet was very boring. I’m kind of picky so it left me with very little options. My diet was as follows:
Breakfast
15-20 carbs
No fruit
2-3 oz protein
Lunch
30-45 carbs
2-3 oz protein
Dinner
30-45 carbs
2-3 oz protein
Snacks
1-2 Â 15 carb snacks
Include protein with each snack
I was very strict with my diet and was able to lose 50 lbs without setting foot in a gym. Reading every diabetic book I could and every site I could, was helpful. When I went in for my check-up, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I was no longer testing in the Type 2 Diabetic range!! Every since that day, it’s been three years, I have managed to NOT test in the Type 2 Diabetic range!
So that is my best mile.

Congrats on the weight loss! I have been hating age lately in that my metabolism is really slowing down! I now have to make a more conscious effort about what I eat – it can be tough!
