2020 has been a heck of a year. If someone would have told me back in March that we would be dealing with this still, I would have told them they were crazy. Thanksgiving was a couple weeks ago and we were all faced with whether or not we would be getting together like normal or not. Now we are approaching Christmas, and the same question is on our minds. Will we be getting together like normal, or will we be having a Covid Christmas?

A Covid Christmas
When I think about the possibility that we may not be able to spend Christmas the way we normally do, it makes me very sad. Right now, our state is on a “pause” for 12 more days. Basically restaurants, bars, movie theaters, etc. are closed. There are also restrictions on how any people can get together for an indoor gathering. This “pause” takes us up to December 20th. Am I hopeful that things will not continue to be restricted at Christmas? Sure. Do I think they will still be restricted? Yes. Like most places throughout the United States, Covid cases are going up and our hospitals are getting full. That’s scary to me. So while I don’t want to spend Christmas differently this year, we may need too.

A Different Look at the Holidays
I am not going to sit here and preach to you about what you should do. That’s not my job and I don’t know your state’s restrictions (if there are any). All I know is what our restrictions are here and how I am thinking about the holidays this year. Like I mentioned earlier, in our state, there are restrictions like no more than 10 people at an indoor gathering. Likewise, there are also recommendations like not gathering with more than two different households. Smaller families may feel comfortable getting together, especially if there are 10 or less people. Larger families may need to get creative. And that’s OK. It stinks big time, but it’s OK.
Zoom Has Become the Mascot of 2020
Prior to March of 2020, I don’t know that I had ever heard of Zoom. If I did, it obviously didn’t make a very big impact on me! But after March of 2020, Zoom was how we got together with others, all from the comfort and safety of our home. One time we played Scattergories with my husbands family. It was a lot of fun! Kind of chaotic, but fun!

Tips for a Covid Christmas
If a Covid Christmas at home, just your immediate family is what you are looking at doing this year, there are plenty of things you can do to make it a fun and special holiday. If you are like me, you will want to plan it out…so do it! One thing we used to do when we were kids was driver around on Christmas Eve and look at all the Christmas lights. Do that! Your kids may turn their nose up at it at first, but I promise, they will get into it eventually. Plus, I would be willing to bet there are houses where ever you are that have gone all out in the decorating department like we have here! Think Clark Griswold level! Other things you can do:
- Order take-out on Christmas Eve and watch a Christmas movie
- Play board games
- Decorate Christmas cookies
- Have a gingerbread house decorating competition
- Zoom with your family
- Have a scavenger hunt on Christmas morning for the presents

Whatever You Choose…
Have a safe and happy holiday season! Hopefully things will be back to normal next year! Leave a comment and let me know how you are spending the holidays this year. We are playing everything by ear. Who knows what our Covid cases will look like in a couple weeks. At any rate, knowing me and my personality, we will have a plan A, B, and C!
