For instance, I have a very spirited 3 1/2 year old who loves to run off in stores, grab at things, etc. Today he grabbed some candy off the shelf. I told him that he had two choices, put the candy back or leave it on the end cap but he will be going to his room when we got home. He picked the candy up and proceeded to put it back where he got it. I was stunned. My child does not listen like that! I am definitely a believer in parenting with love and logic!
Be sure to definitely pick up a copy of the books in this series. While not every single thing will always work with every single child, there are definite tips and tricks you can take away from these books that will help. Kids may not initially come with an instruction manual AND I don’t want to parent mine solely from a book, but I am, however very open to learning new ideas. Especially as my kids get older and start approaching the tween and teen ages. Those, to me, are scary times!! I have this book coming to my house now:

i am all about choices! i think that 90% of the time when i give my toddler a choice she complies. and you never give a choice that you don’t want them to choose. it can be as simple as shoes. the other day she started to throw a fit when i told her to get her shoes on. so i said “which shoe do you want to put on first? the right one or the left one?” and she picked the right one and gave me no more grief about it. as long as they think they have a say in the matter, it goes much more smoothly 🙂
