Disney. President’s Day weekend 2020. Soccer tournament. That was the last time we did anything outside of our town. If someone would have told me that shortly after returning home, I would be locked in my house for months on end, I would have stayed in Disney a little longer! Like many people, I had so many plans for the summer of 2020. However, the global pandemic had other plans for us all. With that said, 2021 is our year. This is my 2021 bucket list.

2020 Has Been a Year
I had so many plans for the summer of 2020. You see, the last couple summers, I have been recovering from knee surgeries, so I wasn’t able to do the things I wanted to do. To say I was disappointed, is an understatement, but then again, so is the rest of the country. But that’s OK. We will get through this Covid stuff, and when we do, I will be pulling out this 2021 bucket list!

What Did I want to Do?
There were two main things I wanted to do in 2020. First was to visit Mackinaw Island (Northern Michigan). I used to go when I was a kid and I loved it there. We used to stay in the city and ride the ferry boat to the island each day. I wanted to stay on the island and maybe even go for my anniversary. Covid had other plans. Secondly, I wanted to go to Washington D.C. Maybe this is stupid, but that is literally my number one bucket list place to go. I’ve never been and I want to go and do all the things. Again, Covid foiled that.

2021 Bucket List Number One Must
To be completely honest, I don’t know how comfortable I will be traveling in 2021. Like everything this past year, I will have to play it by ear. Who knows what things will look like in 2021. However, with that said, if I had to choose one place between Mackinaw Island and Washington D.C. I would probably choose Mackinaw Island. Why? Simply because it’s relatively close to me (under four hours) and I think that after a year of not leaving my house, that would make me more comfortable. Plus Mackinaw City and Mackinaw Island have so much to do and if you’ve never seen Lake Michigan, you have to! It’s beautiful!
Northern Michigan Weekend
Yes, I am obsessed with Northern Michigan. Michigan has so many beautiful places to visit. While I would love to go to Mackinaw with my husband, I also want to visit Traverse City, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and all of the little areas near there. More specifically, I want to do one of the Night Sky events at Sleeping Bear Dunes. I’ve heard that you can see the Milky Way and if I was able to coordinate a trip for exactly when Michigan is expected to see the Northern Lights, my entire life would be made. Witnessing the Northern Lights is literally my number one bucket list thing.

Other Bucket List Items
Besides hopefully visiting those two places, other things I would like to do in 2021, that we were unable to do this year due to Covid or something related to Covid are:
- Celebrate our birthday’s at Vicente’s Cuban restaurant in downtown Detroit
- Build a deck in our backyard (couldn’t in 2020 because the wood was ALWAYS sold out!)
- Go to my writing retreat in May or August (or both!)
- Celebrate holidays like normal with family and friends
- Go to a concert (wanted to go to Journey, but it was canceled in 2020)
- Attend youth sports/school sports
- Take pictures of our kids at homecoming/prom
- Get a second puppy (shh…don’t tell my husband!)
The Bottom Line
All in all, while I would like to do all of the things above, the number one thing I want for 2021, is for things to be better than 2020. Whatever that looks like is OK. Even if things only get a little bit better in 2020, it’s a step in the right direction. I have hope that things will improve, providing we all do our part. We do our part and we can all tackle our 2021 bucket list!
