I went to pick Zachary up from school today and started talking with the other moms as we stood outside freezing our butts off. What you are about to read WILL shock you. So as we all know, this past Monday the kids had the day off school for Martin Luther King day. Of course, on Tuesday and Wednesday they talked about Martin Luther King, who he was, what he did, how he died, lynching…yes you read that right. They talked about what lynching is. Oh wait, I didn’t tell you who they are. They are 6 year old first graders!

Shocked? You should be. I was!

So ya, the conversation got a tad out of hand. Apparently the teacher had all of their attention when she said that Martin Luther King was shot. With a gun. OK so she didn’t add the “with the gun” part, the boys in the class did. Thus began the fascination with death and shooting, etc. Now normally you would expect the conversation to end right there. Oh no. Somehow the topic of “other forms of death” popped up and now there is about 30 six year olds who know what lynching is and that if you put a rope around someones neck and pull up…you have another form of death.

Lovely. Can you imagine the dinner table conversations after that class?
