UPDATE to Mama Bear Coming Out Post

I thought I would update you on my post yesterday about my son being picked on at school.  I spoke to his teacher right before class started and when they had their circle time, she decided to hold one of their community talks (think Town Hall meeting).  Basically during these talks, she invites the kids to either thank someone in the class for something or get something off their chest that is bothering them.  She is teaching them to problem solve and handle situations properly, rather than letting them spiral out of control.

Now remember, Zachary told me last night that he was uncomfortable talking to his teacher because he didn’t want the brat to hate him and then the other kids not like him either.  And here is where I am going to tear up because I am so dang proud of my son…when the teacher asked the kids if there is something they would like to get off their chest, my son raised his hand and proceeded to talk for about 5 minutes about everything that happened yesterday, how it made him feel and how it’s not nice and all he wants to do is be friends.  I know!  Aren’t you proud of him too??? 🙂

So once Zachary aired it all out, they talked about it, the brat apologized and Zachary felt 10 times better.  Not only did he feel better because he spoke his mind and got it off his chest, but he also felt better because he let everyone know that it is not acceptable to him to be treated that way.  And for that, I am so proud of him.

I like the way his teacher handled it.  I think it was much more productive than her pulling the brat aside, calling his mom, etc.  She allowed the kids to work the situation out by facilitating and guiding them to problem solve, but also let the brat know that she is aware of the situation and will be watching him much more closely.

Phew!  This parenting gig sure is tough sometimes!

Wow! I am so impressed with both the teacher and your son for resolving the problem so well!
