Extreme Couponing and Me!

How To

I wouldn’t, by any means, call me an extreme couponer.  However, I am pretty darn good at saving my family of four a significant amount of money when it comes to our groceries.  When I asked a few of my friends how much they spend a week on groceries, the numbers were astonishing to me.  One spends close to $200 a week on groceries.  I spend no more than $40 a week.

So how do I keep my grocery bill so low?

The first thing I do is clip coupons.  I go to my local Dollar Tree EVERY single Sunday morning and buy at least 2 papers (costs me $2.00).  Once I get my papers home I start clipping the coupons.  I clip pretty much everything unless it is something I don’t need like baby stuff.  Once my coupons are clipped, I put them in my coupon binder.  My binder is organized into a bunch of categories…basically a different category for each aisle in the store.  Makes it MUCH easier to sort them this way.

Once my coupons are clipped, I head on over to Bargains to Bounty.  I click on the list for Meijer’s, open up an excel spreadsheet with the headings of:  Item, Quantity, Price, Coupon Amount, and Total Price.  That way when I go to the store, I am able to verify that the item I am there for is actually on sale for what it should be…then there won’t be any surprises at the register.  The nice thing about Bargains to Bounty is the list tells me whether I need a manufacturers coupon, a Meijer Meal Box coupon, an MPerks coupon, or a combination of those 3.  I also note on my spreadsheet which type of coupon I need to use.

My biggest coupon is the one from the pharmacy.  My son has a monthly prescription so every month I either get a coupon for $10 or $20 off my grocery purchase just for using the pharmacy.  This last shopping trip I had both a $10 AND a $20 coupon to use!  Here is a picture of all the items I got at my last shopping trip…I only paid $12.24 for everything in this picture!!

The soy milk alone cost more than $13.  The chicken nuggets were around $12.  The meat was over $20 or $25.  I really didn’t need to go grocery shopping this week.  But I couldn’t let my pharmacy coupons expire and since I have an extra freezer, I have a place to put all the extra items.
If you have any questions, leave me a comment.  I am by no means an expert, but I save a nice chunk of change on groceries!
