Couponing 101 and The Proper Way to Store Food

How To

I’ve posted many times about how important it is for me to coupon for my family.  I hate paying full price for items when all I need to do is take a little piece of paper with me to the store, give it to the cashier, and like magic…I save tons of money!

Oh how I wish it were that easy.  It’s not hard, but it surely is not as simple as waving a magic wand!  I put in a lot of time and preparation into each shopping trip to make sure that I have no surprises at the register.  Do I always succeed?  Of course not!   I’m only human!  However, most of the time, I know exactly how much I am going to pay before a single item is rung up.  So how do I do it?  Well, first I get my newspapers EVERY Sunday.  I usually go to the Dollar Store, but if I can’t make it there or they run out, I head to Walmart and they will match the price!  Now, when you’re buying newspapers, always buy at least three.  That way you can get multiples of really good deals! The next thing I do is head to the Bargains to Bounty website and I use that site to make a spreadsheet of my shopping list.  I list out the item I want to buy, the quantity, the price, the coupons I need, and then the total price. Once I do that, I ensure I have NO SURPRISES!!

BUT…the most important thing when you coupon is…FOOD STORAGE!  You don’t want to just shove everything on your shelf and be disorganized about it.  Not only will you run out of space because of your lack of organization, but you’ll end up with all the food that expires first in the back and end up throwing a ton of food away.  Eventually I want to invest in one of those things that I can set on my shelf and it will automatically rotate my canned goods so that the old is in front!

I have to admit, I would love to have a small room (like the size of a walk in closet) that I could have shelving and be totally organized with my food storage…but totally not like those crazy hoarders on t.v.  I don’t need floor to ceiling paper towel or diapers for a baby I’ll never have!
