If you’ve followed along the past few years, you would know that I opted to have an outpatient procedure called Novasure. It was supposed to help me with my period symptoms. I’ve updated a few times over the years (read HERE, HERE and HERE) and I thought I would update once again, five years later. Things are not going well…AT ALL. I have no idea if it is because I started taking Metformin for my diabetes or if it is because the procedure just did not last as long as my doctor thought it would. But whatever the reason is, I can’t keep living this way.

Your Period after NovaSure
Never once did my doctor say I will not ever have a period ever again. In fact, the brochure they gave me said it would make my periods much lighter or possibly, non-existent. Perfect! And it really was great, for awhile. Then I started to slowly get cramping and period like symptoms once a month. No big deal. I could deal with that. When I started spotting lightly once a month for a day or two, I could handle that too. But when my period comes back with a vengeance and lasts all month…I cannot deal with that. For the entire month of December I’ve had a period every week. It would last for a day or two, then go away for a day…but it would come back the following day.
How are things now?
I can’t live like this. Not to mention, when you Google spotting between periods, you don’t get the greatest search results. I do not recommend Googling ANYTHING medical…EVER. Right about now I am pretty convinced I have cancer. And the fact that the doctor got me in so quickly isn’t helping. I know I’m being a tad dramatic and it’s probably nothing other than I need to have the hysterectomy my doctor and I talked about in 2008, but still…WebMD didn’t help much to ease my mind.
I do remember my doctor talking to me about something called Adenomyosis and in looking that up (yes…I know…I shouldn’t!) it makes sense and the only cure for it is a hysterectomy. So at any rate, I will be seeing my doctor on Thursday to discuss a partial hysterectomy (I would like to keep my ovaries, if at all possible).
Have you had a hysterectomy? Did they do it laparoscopically? I’m nervous that they will have to go in through my c-section scar…I am not ready for a recovery like that. But we shall see.

I’m so sorry you are still dealing with this, Leah. I can’t even imagine how this is not only physically uncomfortable, but also creating havoc with your day to day life! I haven’t had a hysto, I had a tubal recently. But I do remember the doctor telling me they do hysto through the belly button the same way now so the recovery is much easier. Keeping you in my thoughts!

Thanks Kenda.
Thankfully I have the most understanding husband. There is nothing more embarrassing than to think you are through with your period only to find out AFTER you’ve been intimate, that it’s appeared again. I’ve done a lot of reading and I wonder if I have fibroid’s or something. That could cause the bleeding. Who knows. At any rate, I’m not leaving that doctors office until we have a plan for a hysterectomy in the works. I can’t have kids any longer do to the Novasure (which I am OK with) so just take the darn thing out.

I’m so sorry you are going through all that mess! My thoughts are with you and I will anxiously await to read an update about your appointment on Thursday. I haven’t had a hysterectomy, so I don’t know much about that. But I do have Polycystic Ovarian Disorder and it makes periods miserable – as if they weren’t any way. Not to mention, it caused my infertility for 12 years. I started taking Metformin about 6 months ago due to diabetes issues and the Polycyctic Ovarian Disorder. My Dr. says there is a link between the two. And yes, although the internet can be helpful in many ways, sometime it’s just too much information. Hang in there! Sounds like you have a great hubby who is very supportive and that helps a whole lot!! 🙂

I’m very sorry to hear that, Leah. I had reached out to you almost 2 years ago when I had the procedure done. Thus far, I’m having success with it (minimal spotting once a month, as opposed to the 2 continuous weeks of heavy bleeding per month I dealt with before). Unfortunately I’ve also put on a great deal of weight, although I am slowly turning that around.
I have heard about other women having problems similar to yours, so I am cautiously optimistic about the procedure being a total success for me.

I’m glad it’s still working for you!! I think a lot of my problems stem from taking Metformin for my type two diabetes.

Hi,
I too had novasure 5 years ago and NO periods which was AWESOME however about 6 mths ago started getting occasional cramps for a few hrs then they would go away. However had cramps 1st Jan this year and bleeding 2nd Jan for about 3 days with bad cramping. Woke this morning and bleeding again (after cramps again last 2 days). Had procedure initially as bleeding 6 weeks straight with golf ball clots then stopped for 2-3 days then start again. Can’t go back to that!!!
I just wondered where you were at? I hope you have a resolution 🙂

Hi Dianne, I get my period almost regularly now, but it only lasts for about 3 days…sometimes 4. However, the pain I had before (much more than just normal cramping) is back. 🙁

Hi Leanne, so you didn’t go through with the “partial”? I had t Novasure last March. My cycle continued except it was normal and not 3 weeks long like it was prior to the procedure. Then Feb- April I didn’t have a cycle. This month my cycle returned and it’s lasted two weeks now so I’m considering Option 2.
DeJon Hill says
I’m sorry, Leah, not Leanne…

I opted not to get the partial. I haven’t been having many issues at all since. So I decided to hold off.
