Move over, dinner and a movie…bookstore dates are where it’s really at. Whether you’re both hardcore bookworms or just looking for a quieter (and way cuter, let’s be honest) way to spend time together, a bookstore date is charming, affordable, and full of conversation starters! Here are some creative, super cozy, and even a tad quirky bookstore date ideas that will have you both falling in love…maybe with each other and a new book!

Bookstore Date Ideas

These ideas are perfect for the couple that likes to have a budget friendly date night. Just be sure to a price limit if you are buying each other a book!

Blind Book Pick for Each Other

First, choose your bookstore. Are you going to go to a large chain store like Barnes and Noble or are you going to go to a smaller, individually owned store. Once you get there, split up and pick a book for your significant other that you think they’ll love. Whether it’s based on the title, the cover (it’s OK to judge a book by it’s cover in this instance), or a totally wild guess…you’ll both get a surprise and a new book to share. You can choose to go off on your own with zero guidance, or you can pick one of their top three themes they like (thriller, romance, self-help, etc).

Bookstore Scavenger Hunt

Make a fun list of Bookish challenges and try to check them all off together. You can use challenges like:

  • Find a book with the word “love” in the title
  • Spot a cover with an animal on it
  • Pick a book you read in middle school

Turn it into a photo challenge or just enjoy wandering the aisles like adorable book nerds!

Build a Dream Library Together

Walk through the bookstore and point out all the books you would want in your dream home library. Not only is this a sneak peak into each others interests, but also your future cozy home! If you are already married, then maybe you should level up this date by first stopping at Ikea, get a bookshelf and then go to the bookstore to fill it up! If you a woodworker like my husband, get your spouse to build you your dream bookcase!

Read Funny Kids’ Books Together

I don’t know about you, but there are some pretty great kid books out there. Head on over to the children’s section and pick out the silliest picture books you can find. Sit down and read them together. This lighthearted moment will have you laughing like you are six years old again! If you have young children or young nieces and nephews, pick them up a copy of your favorite book. You can never go wrong with giving a kid a book!

Create a Shared TBR Stack

One of the things I love, almost as much, as reading is talking about what I just read. Take turns adding books to a shared “to be read” list. Whether you end up reading the same book or just sharing your favorites, it’s a sweet way to bond over stories…and maybe, just maybe, you can start your own two person book club! This would be hard for my husband and I. We do NOT like reading the same books. He enjoys fantasy books and I enjoy books with serial killers and suspense. BUT, it would be fun to be able to talk about what we read…

Leave Secret Notes in the Aisles

I was hesitant to share this last one, but someone did this and I thought it was super cute finding the notes. What you do is you bring a pen and some sticky notes or small pieces of paper with you to the bookstore. Leave cute or funny notes in random books. They can be things like:

  • “This book made me cry in public”
  • “Read this and thank me later”
  • Page 273. You’re welcome”

It’s like spreading literary love for the next reader!

The Final Chapter

These bookstore date ideas are not just about books…it’s about discovery, laughter, and a quiet connection. Whether you’re reading poetry in a corner or swapping your childhood favorites, it’s an experience that feels low-pressure, but with all the feels. So next time you’re planning a date night, skip the reservations and head to the nearest bookstore. Or better yet…get a quick dinner (hey…you still have to eat) and then head to the bookstore!
