Dorm Room Must Have Items

Parents of high school seniors, are you freaking out yet? I was last year at this time. So much was changing and some of the changes were happening fast. We had to fill out the dorm room agreement, pay the deposit, plan a graduation party, buy stuff for the dorm room, etc. Everything was happening at once. One thing I wish I would have done differently was make a list early of the things that were needed for the dorm room and start buying them when they are on sale. Now some kids will want to coordinate their room with their future roommates, and that’s fine. The items I will be putting her are things that are needed, and are not decorations. My hope is that when things start going on sale for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, you can get these items on sale!

Must Have Dorm Room Items

I am going to try and organize this list as best as I can and group things. If you see something in bold print, that means it is a MUST buy dorm room item. For instance, these bags are a must buy. We took six with us and it really helped to get all the items to the college, but also made it very easy to get up to her room. Buy them now and hang on to them. They do sell out quick and sometimes restocking is slow. They are currently on a good sale!

The Dorm Room Bed Items

Check with your individual school, but most dorm beds are twin XL size. They are not exactly the greatest mattress, so you will want a mattress topper that adds some extra cushion to the bed, plus a waterproof pad. This is what I got my daughter:

You want both items. Put the mattress topper on first, then the waterproof pad, then the sheet. This way, if they spill water on their bed, it won’t soak into that 3″ topper! In addition to the topper and the waterproof pad, you want twin xl sheets. I found my daughter some breathable, cooling sheets. She has not complained about getting hot while she sleeps.

Bedroom Accessories

If I were to call my daughter up right now and have her tell me the top five things that are a must have in her dorm room, I know exactly what she would say. First, a mini fridge is a must. This girl and her friends keep their mini fridges stocked. The next couple items would be her bed shelfie and her Woozoo fan. And finally, her shoe organizers and bins for storing mac n cheese cups!

Immune boosting Items

Let’s face it, when your kids move into a dorm, they are moving into a giant petri dish of germs. My daughter has done a really good job of staying healthy so far. Some things that she is doing that I think is helping that are:

• Working out at the rec center
• Going for walks outside
• Staying very hydrated
