Keeping Your Immune System Strong (Even When Germs are Everywhere)

Well…it’s that time of year again…that time when everyone around you is sniffling, sneezing, and coughing! You dodge germs at the gym; dodge them at the grocery store; you even have to dodge them in your own home. Germs. Are. Everywhere. We all know that our body has their own little built in defense system known as the immune system. With a little care, you can make your immune system strong and keep it that way all winter long. I follow these tips and tricks I’m about to share with you and I can’t tell you the last time I’ve been sick. It’s been that long!

How to Keep Your Immune System Strong

These five tips I’m about to share with you are how I personally keep my immune system strong. Am I perfect at it 100% of the time? Of course not, but I do try to prioritize these tips because let’s face it, as moms, we don’t have time to be sick.

Tip 1: Feed Your Gut, Fuel Your Immunity

Fun fact…about 70% of your immune system lives in your gut (Source: UCLA). Those little microbes you’ve seen me talk about before, do more than just help you digest the food you eat. When your gut bacteria is balanced, your immune system can respond faster and stronger to germs. This is why I am so obsessed with my Plexus Triplex system. This system helps to support gut balance, nutrient absorption, and overall wellness. A happy gut = a happy immune system.

Tip 2: Move Your Body

Exercise is not just about fitness goals and helping you lose weight. It’s one of the best, and natural, ways to boost your immune function. When you move, you increase circulation, helping immune cells travel through your body more efficiently. So, whether I am walking my dog, doing yoga at home, or hitting the gym, I always aim for a minimum of 30 minutes of movement most days of the week. Just remember to listen to your body. If you need a rest day, take a rest day. Otherwise you will end up with shin splits like me. That’s not fun!

Tip 3: Prioritize Sleep Like It’s Your Job

If you’ve ever pulled an all nighter, and we all have, and you felt run down the next day, then you already know how important sleep is. While we sleep, our body releases immune boosting proteins called cytokines, which help fight off infection and inflammation. A few pro tips for the best night sleep:

  • Keep your room cool and dark
  • Try to put your phone away an hour before bed
  • Try setting up a consistent bedtime routine

Tip 5: Stress Less

Overtime, chronic stress can weaken your immune response. I know it is easier said than done sometimes, but try to weave small calming rituals into your day. Things like deep breaking, journaling, reading, prayer, or even a quick stretch or a power nap. One of my favorite things that I have added into my day is gratitude.
