How many of you reading this has ever felt the butterflies in your stomach sensation? Or felt nauseous when stressed out? Maybe you’ve experienced brain fog after a week of unhealthy eating. None of that is a coincidence. Your gut and brain are talking…constantly, through a powerful network known as the gut-brain axis. Many people think of the brain as the control center of the body, and in many ways it is, but what if I told you that the gut calls a lot of the shots? In fact, the gut is not just an isolated organ in the body. It is the central hub that influences every major body system. Think about that for a moment. We are talking about brain health, immune health, hormone health, and cardio-metabolic health.

The Importance of a Healthy Gut
This past weekend, I had the privilege of hearing Dr. Shaw speak at the Plexus convention. He gave us a wealth of information about the gut, but a few things stuck out.
- People who have healthy guts have healthy brains.
- 70-90% of your immune system lives in your gut.
- Many hormones rely on your gut for proper metabolism.
- Your gut plays a powerful role in supporting your cardiovascular health.
We will take a closer look at each of these.
Healthy Gut = Healthy Brain
First of all, I would like to point out something. I am not a doctor. This information is from a speech given by Dr. Shah at convention. None of this is to diagnose or treat anything. I am simply stating what I have learned and laying out the things I am doing to better that communication between my gut and my brain.
Dr. Shaw tells us that when you have a healthy gut, things like attention deficits are lower. Depression is lower. And most importantly, the piece I really liked to hear, they have less chance of getting Alzheimer’s disease. My mom had Alzheimer’s disease and I am trying to do everything I can to NOT go down the path she went down.
Most of Your Immune System is in Your Gut
This surprised me. 70-90% of your immune system is in your gut. If your gut is healthy and strong, then you are not getting sick as often; you aren’t as affected by seasonal allergies as much; and a strong immune system is critical for cancer prevention. Imagine if everyone stopped eating ultraprocessed foods and really worked on their gut health…there would be less people getting sick around us!
Hormones and Your Gut Health
Dr. Shah states the following, many people throughout the United States are suffering from hormone dysregulation earlier and earlier in life and that’s strongly connected to the fact that their gut is not healthy. I know I am in that lovely perimenopause stage of life and while in the moment of a hot flash (if you saw me at convention you know) it seems bad, but because my gut health is on the mend, it’s not as bad as it could be!
Heart Health is Connected to Gut Health
When you have an imbalance in your gut microbiome, also known as dysbiosis, it can weaken your intestinal lining. This weakened lining can then allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream, thus triggering systemic inflammation. When your body’s inflammation is high, this can lead to higher chances of heart related issues, as well as it can disrupt the hearts electrical pathways. Not only that, but there are gut influenced biles that play a huge role in how your body effectively metabolizes cholesterol and eliminates cholesterol. When things are not in balance, this leads to higher cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
How Plexus Supports the Gut – Brain Connection
Gut health is at the center of the wellness conversation for Plexus. It’s their why. Products like Slim, ProBio5, BioCleanse, Restore, and our new product, Armor are designed to support a healthy microbiome, digestive wellness, and gut barrier function. By focusing on foundational wellness, Plexus aims to help people support their body’s natural processes from the inside out. Armor debuted at convention. I have been taking this product for the last seven days. The red bumps I had on my upper arm that would never go away, are going away. My body feels great. And remember, 70-90% of your immune system lives in your gut. I was just at a convention with a lot of people. Some have come home sick. I had one day where I felt off. But because I focus on my gut health and started taking Armor, my immune system did it’s thing and fought off whatever crud others were getting.
Are You Listening?
Your gut and brain are talking every single day. The question is, are you listening? When your gut is healthy and supported, it can positively influence many aspects of your well-being…from digestion and immunity to energy and mental clarity. The gut-brain axis reminds us that health isn’t about isolated systems. Everything is connected. And sometimes, the path to feeling better starts with supporting the conversation happening inside your gut.
