As a parent, the one thing I want them to know is that I want them to be the best that they can be. I never want my kids to strive to be perfect. That doesn’t exist, but I would like them to leave each situation knowing that they tried their very best. I think this allows kids to learn from mistakes and strive to do better next time.

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Be the Best You Can Be

The newest Chicken Soup for the Soul book, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Be The Best You Can Be is one that I was very excited to receive. It goes along with the messages that my husband and I have tried to send to our kids. I have left it out for my kids to thumb through.

Having goals and values is something else that is very important to me. I try to teach my kids the importance of having goals and living with values, but kids don’t always list to mom! However, this Chicken Soup for the Soul book is filled with inspiring true stories that backs what I am trying to instill. It teaches tolerance, respect, and compassion…three things I would love my kids to be known for.

There is one story that really resonated with me. Growing a Spine: Doing the Right Thing has the exact message I am trying to send them. I am a broken record, but I tell my kids that they need to stand up for what they believe in. Besides that, they need to stand up for others that are not being treated right. Finally, they need to stand up for themselves. This story was one that I read to them right away. We didn’t have to talk much after the story because they both knew why I read it to them. Later that evening my daughter came up to me and said “when I see someone making fun of a kid, I tell them to stop and be nice”. She gets it!
