Why You Need a Summer Bucket List

First of all, time has a way of flying (hello…it’s already the end of April) and summer always seems to be over way too fast. I mean, one minute it’s Memorial Day, and the next you’re thinking about school supplies, Halloween costumes, and stocking stuffers. For me, creating a bucket list helps you:

  • Stay present and intentional
  • Make time for what actually matters
  • Balance fun with rest
  • Include the whole family in planning
  • Avoid that “we didn’t do anything this summer” feeling

And when it’s written down, you’re way more likely to follow through. At least I am!

What to Include on Your Summer Bucket List

The keyword here is YOUR. This is your summer bucket list. You can put on it whatever you want. It doesn’t need to be perfect. The best lists are those that are filled with simple joys and a few bigger adventures. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking…

Simple Everyday Joys

  • Watch the sunrise
  • Have a reading day outside
  • Go for a sunset walk
  • Eat dinner on the patio

Family Fun Ideas

  • Backyard movie night
  • Water balloon fight
  • Make homemade popsicles (I love this mold and this one)
  • Go on a nature walk

Mini Adventures

  • Visit a local beach or lake
  • Take a roadtrip to a museum
  • Go to the zoo
  • Day trip to a nearby town

Self-Care and Wellness

  • Start your mornings outside
  • Stay hydrated
  • Move your body daily
  • Try something new just for YOU

Tips to Actually Stick to Your List

First and foremost, be flexible. Things change, you will need to pivot, and that’s OK! What I find to be helpful is to pick 1 or 2 items per week to do. For those bigger activities, like going to the zoo or the beach, schedule those in advance. Keep a mix of “easy wins” (things like making popsicles or a water balloon fight) with bigger activities. But most of all, celebrate what you do complete and have fun!
